Extreme skier Ryan Hawks of South Burlington, Vermont died Tuesday morning from injuries sustained in a crash at the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour North American Championships at Kirkwood, Calif., which ended Monday. He was 25 years old.
Hawks was injured in a backflip attempt Sunday. He is the third person to die in freeskiing competitions in the last four years, according to ESPN.
In a bio on the Green Mountain Freeride site, Hawks said he “grew up skiing at Sugarbush, Mad River Glen and innumerable backyard jumps.” He graduated from UVM last year with a degree in mechanical engineering.
